This will be continuous but here's some pictures of parts I've done recently. Only have semi-gloss black but I'm going to be ordering other colors shortly along with getting a bigger oven.

I might be interested in having you do a few things for me man... my trim on the e30 is that god awful nasty 80-90's chrome and I would like to have it coated a satin black... if you wanna shoot me a quote that would kick ass :)

Your doing this yourself? What is needed to do this?

Air compressor, sand blaster, oven, powdercoating gun and then all the essentials to go with the gun and more prepping material than anything.

I always sandblast the part, soak it in brake kleen, gas it out in the oven for a few minutes, tape and plug what is necessary and then coat. It's different for every part but that's the overall process. If I didn't have my dad's shop with all of the bigger equipment already there it would have cost me way too much to do it.

having a blasting cabinet is one of the biggest expense, a small air compressor would be fine as well as a house oven for most parts

prep is the absolute most important part

Cheapest cabinet I have found is $120 from Tractor Supply. You would easily have $700 or so into an okay setup. Everything except my oven and gun are about as best as they can get and I'm very lucky to be able to use them. Dealing with a small compressor would be a huge pain.

Prep is by far the biggest thing. I spent over an hour and a half prepping this valve cover.

Agreed but that's all I have until someone places a custom order which I just got. Just waiting on what color he needs specifically then I have to order the powder. I've been told that black is actually one of the hardest colors to get to look good. I guess just the same with paint on a car but it came out really good. I'm going to need you to take some pictures of it next week to really show it off. I really wanted to get one done so I started to prep it and found out it would just fit, literally by about 3/4" so I decided to coat it. I really don't think it will go on my car because I'm stuck between a yellow gold and a metallic purple (kinda like the HKS color) but it gave me great practice on them and I learned a ton which is what I was shooting for. Plan on doing my other spare one tomorrow if the local PC company will sell me powder.

you could always polish the long runners and leave the rest black... or polish other parts of it. I luv the combo of black and polish...

Got some parts in from Jon and got them coated. 1G BOV (two tone), battery tray and tie downs. The battery stuff was so rusted it made it really hard to work with but like Jon said it's just a battery tray so it doesn't need to be perfect.

I bought 2 valve covers and got another free from a friend, bought a 2G TB to rebuild and clean up and a 2G TB elbow to coat also:

Jon's parts blasted

Coated

Elbow Coated

High Gloss Red. Didn't have any chrome to get it nice and bright but I love the way it turned out. Pictures make it look like crap though because of the lighting. Ugh :ak

Going to finish blasting the other valve covers tomorrow and possibly start shaving one. Going to rebuild the 2 other throttle bodies I have and do some coating on them. Coating a fuel tank cover for a friends pit bike on Sunday. Going to do some experimenting tomorrow on some random parts.

What cure schedule did you use for that red? The pics make it look very rough. Is it just the pics? I have used that several times and it flows out very nicely. Anyways the black stuff looks nice. Is that gloss black or mirror black?

Oh by the way I got you some glass bead. It went up to $22 a bag, so waith taxes and stuff you owe me lots....haha

The pics make it look a lot worse than it really is. I'll have Earl get some pics Sunday with his camera. It definitely has some pitting though and I really think it's due to it being cast aluminum and me using this really coarse sand. I'm not sure if it was because of my process of curing but I gassed it for 7 minutes, let it cool for about 5 or so, coated it, left it in for 13 minutes at 350.

The black is Eastwood's Semi-Gloss Black. Came with the kit I got since it's the cheapest shit they carry.

Earl told me it went up, just let me know how much I owe ya then!

I can has good pics? Thanks squirrely

Coated this one at 400 for 20 minutes, also did a honda pit bike cover that came out amazing which showed me that it's the coarse beads I'm using on the cast aluminum that is making the valve covers a little pitted. Need to get those glass beads Thursday!

Got the glass beads and did another valve cover and 1G BOV and pipe the past weekend. I have a ton of orders coming in for Spring Break and have quite a few colors on the way!

Here are some before and after shots of the red valve cover pictured above. The orange peel is not like it looks in the pictures whatsoever:

Totally rearranged my shop area at my dad's business, figured out the wiring with my new oven so that's good to go. The way I have it set up now makes it so much easier to do anything, before it was all cluttered as you can kind of tell in my previous pictures. I set it up so I can easily change beads back to the coarse ones if need be.

Also got some new colors in that have been fun toying around with.

Hot Candy Blue

03-05-2010, 07:58 PM
very nice work! Is the lettering polished, painted, or ???

95TSIAWD$
03-05-2010, 10:16 PM
It's polished, I just take a mouse sander to it with 60grit and it comes out pretty nice! It takes forever to get the powder off but it's definitely worth the time. if I had the steady hands and patience I would tape them off and they would be coated red but I have tried it about 5 times now and simply can't do it.

Wow I really like that blue and it came out great! I'll be getting with you asap to get my valve cover done and then later when my intake manifold is all shaved...

Keep up the good work!

I might send a couple small parts your way. Terry will probably be doing my frame if his oven is big enough. I think I might go with that candy blue color for my frame. Lately I've been thinking about doing the frame some sort of cool color.

Whats the turn around time on, let's say 10 small pieces all black?

95TSIAWD$
03-07-2010, 10:57 PM
That hot candy blue is a very sick color! That should definitely set your bike off.

Timing really all depends, usually 2 weeks max but if someone needs parts rushed I can make a special trip home to do them. I'm home now until this weekend but will probably have to come back the weekend after to coat a few valve covers on their way in. I try to come back as much as possible even if it's to do pieces that people aren't worried about turn around time. I know I hate waiting for things even if I'm not in a rush so I try to meet expectations that I would want if I was the customer.

03-08-2010, 04:52 AM
I can get a handlefull of pieces to you early this week if you want. Then possibly they would be done by this weekend?

95TSIAWD$
03-08-2010, 01:19 PM
Yeah I could definitely have them done by this weekend. You'll have to ship them to me though since I'm out of the area back home which is about 3 hours from you. Shipping should only take 1-2 days though. Let me know what you want to do. You can shoot me a text/call 814-594-6383

Wow, didn't realize you were doing this out of town. Let me talk to terry and see what kind of time frame he can get me and I'll let you know. I thought you were in Mansfield, i would have hand delivered the parts lol.

03-08-2010, 05:06 PM
Lol sorry about that. I go to school in Mansfield but all of my equipment is at my dad's business where I powdercoat. I'm usually home 2-3 times a month though.

BLOW ME ASSHOLE!! That's what I have to say LOL. Everyone wants that damn color. I originally planned on it being the color for my bay but now I'm sick of seeing it so I don't know what I'm going to use.

Brandon, look how easy it is :P

New Ultra Chrome. I like it much better than wheel silver but I still need to hot flock the main color since I can't adjust my gun.

At first I wasn't happy with this powder from Rosey's, the Wet Black would always come out a semi-gloss but I made a few adjustments and man is it glossy as ever! It is definitely like a mirror and I decided after seeing this that mine will be the same. The lettering is done in PBTP mirror red. I did this for 2.3L_turbo on Mitsu-Marketplace.

First wrinkle I got to do was this Red Wrinkle from PBTP. It turned out pretty good IMO. I did this for an eBay member.

Another eBay member requested one done exactly like Corey's(gofer) on Mitsu-Media so I hooked this guy up with another 3 colored valve cover.

I just got in Purple Starlight and Neon Pink for 2 customers, can't wait to try them out and see how they look!

Purple Starlight. I guess I should have gotten some closer pictures in good lighting to see the sparkle in it.

Finally picked out the new color for my engine bay!

Just kidding :) Did that for a girl on DsmTuners. The pink was absolutely horrible to lay down. It is suppose to be a single coat well that wasn't working so I laid down a chrome base and tried to lay it down over that with no luck so then I said FLOCK it. Wouldn't lay down at a PMT of 180 so I got it up to 300 and finally it laid down how I wanted it to. After this I had to do the Matte Black, well let's just say that didn't want to lay onto the pink in certain spots but I did a little swearing and finally got it how I wanted it. I was using my friend's (shredwin) dual voltage EW gun attempting this too.

Didn't get any great pictures with this but I got the sparkle to really show on this one in the picture compared to the last one I did. This one was done for Stavi.

This was for an eBay member who was set on getting it done in a chrome even after my warnings of the dulling effect. It didn't turn out too bad though! This is Ultra Chrome with Crystal High Gloss Clear.

A few more parts I did:

1G BOV in PBTP Mirror Red for my car.

6 bolt intake manifold in PBTP SD Wet Black/Mirror Red lettering I did for my car.

6 bolt intake manifold in PBTP SD Wet Black/Polished lettering for Jeverts on Mitsu-Marketplace.

I'm definitely not a fan of the substrate on the intake manifolds since they are such a huge cast piece they aren't going to look smooth at all unless I sat there sanding for hours and hours.

Shaved valve cover in PBTP Candy Red/PBTP Ultra Chrome base for a customer on the ECMLink forums.
